For many, the Dominican Republic is a symbol of exotic holiday dreams, a paradise of sun, beach, sea and Caribbean joie de vivre. For Christopher Columbus, it was even the most beautiful, worthy of the name ‘the Spanish’, while its indigenous people, the Taíno’s, honoured it with the name ‘Quisqueya’ meaning fertile mother earth.

The Dominican Republic is located in the Greater Antilles, on an island called Hispaniola, which lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The country offers a variety of natural beauty unique in the Caribbean: lush subtropical vegetation, steppes and deserts, mountain ranges with peaks over 3000 m high, breathtaking waterfalls, cave systems, an exciting history and, of course, the famous white sandy beaches and turquoise sea. In addition, the island offers an incredible variety of wildlife: unique bird species, crocodiles, giant iguanas, flamingos, and humpback whales – are just a small list of the biodiversity that can be encountered in its natural environment during a trip through this beautiful country. With a size of only 380 x 270 kilometers, there is a lot to discover and experience in the Dominican Republic with relaxed travel times – whether looking to explore the natural wonders, experience action and adventure, follow the footsteps of Columbus, or simply enjoy the most beautiful beaches of the Caribbean.
